Michael Rocks Us and Carly Tries to Win Me Over
Michael Johns, “We Will Rock You”/”We Are the Champions”: 20
Lucky Michael that he was born in a year with Queen. This was good. Yes, he struggled a little with those high notes in the last chorus, but I’m willing to forgive that. And kudos to him for being able to outsing the band. They don’t make it easy.
Carly Smithson, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”: 17
So, Carly actually did kind of fulfill my request. She did sing the Bonnie Tyler hit from the year she was born, it was just 1983 instead of 1984. But even with that, I had to give her a 3 in song choice—not because it wasn’t a good choice, but because she didn’t pick the most dramatic part of the song. She should’ve gotten to that final chorus sooner and I think she botched some of the lyrics. I’m totally with Simon on this one. I thought I would really like it and I just kept waiting and waiting for that big moment and it never came. Of course, maybe it would have come if someone would turn down the mics on those backup singers.
