Grand Ole Opry Week: What Will They Sing?

Country week is a tradition on “American Idol,” but this year’s might have a little twist…

It’s actually Grand Ole Opry week as the Idols will perform “songs popularized by Opry members,” according to FOX.

That would mean Country Week standards like Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban are out, because they’re not members.

But sometimes the theme is not as cut and dry as it seems. Remember last year on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Week when David Cook did Duran Duran?

However, VotefortheWorst.com has posted a song list they say is the one the Idols were given to choose their songs from. And if it’s authentic—and they do seem to be right about these kinds of things—the Idols really do have their work cut out for them.

The list, which consists only of Opry members, does contain several Idol standard artists like Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, and Garth Brooks, but only a few songs for each artist.

For example, the only songs on the list for Garth Brooks are “Friends In Low Places,” “The Dance,” “Shameless” and “More Than a Memory.” No “Ain’t Goin’ Down ‘Til the Sun Comes Up” or any of his really rockin’ numbers.

In fact, much of the list seems a little subdued…

With one glaring exception. VotefortheWorst is already lobbying for someone to do Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.” Maybe Megan or Anoop will oblige them…

If I were Alexis or Allison or Lil, I would stick with Reba McEntire or Pam Tillis and stay away from Carrie Underwood. Remember what I’ve said about current songs. They’re just too risky. This song list gives the contestants a chance to sing more classic songs, and I suggest they take that chance.

As for the guys, there are plenty of ballads for them to take on. In fact, I think Danny or Michael should do the Ronan Keating version of Alison Krauss’ “When You Say Nothing At All.” I hope Kris will do something to showcase his guitar.

As for Adam, I honestly haven’t a clue. But I’m sure he’ll think of something…

“American Idol” airs tomorrow for two hours beginning at 8 p.m…
